When you come to us for a personalised nutrition consultation, we base our recommendations on the following:

  • Your goals – What is it you want to achieve? Do you want to lose weight, regain your energy, balance your hormones or improve digestion etc?
  • Past & family history – Do you or any of your family suffer from chronic disease or  have any pre-existing conditions?  What symptoms are you currently experiencing?
  • Lifestyle – How much exercise do you do each week? Are you suffering from stress? Do you need a simple to follow meal plan for a busy family?
  • Allergies – Do you have any known allergies or intolerances to food?

We are all unique, with different genes and environmental influences that impact genetic expression, something known as epigenetics. Even twins may not have the same reaction to foods, as they have each been exposed to different environmental stimuli. Not all macronutrients were created equal.

Macronutrients include protein, fats & carbohydrates. It might surprise you to know that not everyone stores and utilises these nutrients in the same way. This is why generic weight loss programs don’t work for everyone.

For instance, while Jane may function well on a high protein diet because she naturally holds more muscle mass, Max might keep his weight down on a mid to low carbohydrate diet which helps to regulate his blood sugar better. Genetics influence how we use macronutrients and it’s for this reason that something like nutrigenomic testing can cut through the red tape, providing the missing link for those wanting to improve their health and optimise their nutritional intake.

Nutrigenomic Testing and Hair Mineral Analysis

Further investigation is helpful and sometimes necessary to ascertain what nutrients or foods you need to improve your health or get it back on track. Nutrigenomics is the study of how food interacts with genes, and it’s now possible to discover how your body utilises and stores macronutrients, and whether you’re likely to suffer from nutritional deficiencies and what type.

For instance, nutrigenomic testing showed Jane that she is suited to a high protein diet, but she also carries the gene mutations for MTHFR (Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase), an enzyme used to metabolise folate which means she cannot utilise it properly. Jane is trying to get pregnant, so she needs to increase her intake of green leafy vegetables and take an activated folate supplement to prevent deficiency. Max carries both genes for familial high cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia), so he should avoid a high intake of saturated fats and make sure he eats plenty of fresh foods containing antioxidants.

Hair mineral analysis can also show nutrient storage levels, whether deficiencies or imbalances exist, and to what extent. Both of these tests are very useful to establish what nutrients are best for YOUR unique health profile.

Food Intolerances

Part of personalising nutrition is addressing food allergies and intolerances. It’s common for people to avoid certain foods because they make them feel sluggish, bloated, or constipated, or nauseous. A qualified health practitioner is the best person to conduct assessments for these conditions. There are a variety of investigations that can easily form part of a treatment plan, helping you feel better quicker. Removing any foods that are causing symptoms is very important, because this can cause imbalances in the rest of the body, resulting in wide-spread inflammation.
